Being Mode

Being mode, associated more with the logical mode of cognition, is not goal oriented. It is more interested in experiencing a situation as it is without a need to change anything. The various approaches to MBCT all concur that good mental health involves the ability of an individual to consciously switch between being and doing modes when appropriate, with the recognition that both modes are useful in certain situations and detrimental in others. For example, if you are crossing the street and a truck is barreling down upon you, operating in being mode will help to make your life a much shorter one than if you can switch immediately to doing mode and get out of the way.
